CyberPanel Incorrect Default Permissions Vulnerability

CyberPanel contains an incorrect default permissions vulnerability that allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to execute commands as root.

Published Oct 29, 2024 · Updated May 16, 2026
Why patchRisk explained in plain English
Worst-case scenarioIf unpatched

A remote attacker, without authentication, can achieve full data confidentiality loss, arbitrary modification of data, complete denial of service or system unavailability. CISA has confirmed use of this vulnerability in known ransomware campaigns — treat as high priority for remediation. Federal agencies are required to remediate by 2024-11-28 under CISA BOD 22-01.

How the attack worksNo clicks needed

This is a Missing Authentication for Critical Function (CWE-306) vulnerability in CyberPersons CyberPanel. upgrademysqlstatus in databases/views.py in CyberPanel (aka Cyber Panel) before 5b08cd6 allows remote attackers to bypass authentication and execute arbitrary commands via /dataBases/upgrademysqlstatus by bypassing secMiddleware (which is only for a POST request) and using shell metacharacters in the statusfile property, as exploited in the wild in October 2024 by PSAUX. Versions through 2.3.6 and (unpatched) 2.3.7 are affected. Exploitation requires remote network access, low attack complexity, no authentication required, and no user interaction required.
