OSGeo GeoServer JAI-EXT Code Injection Vulnerability
OSGeo GeoServer JAI-EXT contains a code injection vulnerability that, when programs use jt-jiffle and allow Jiffle script to be provided via network request, could allow remote code execution.
A remote attacker, without authentication, can achieve full data confidentiality loss, arbitrary modification of data, complete denial of service or system unavailability. Federal agencies are required to remediate by 2024-07-17 under CISA BOD 22-01.
This is a Code Injection (CWE-94) vulnerability in OSGeo JAI-EXT. JAI-EXT is an open-source project which aims to extend the Java Advanced Imaging (JAI) API. Programs allowing Jiffle script to be provided via network request can lead to a Remote Code Execution as the Jiffle script is compiled into Java code via Janino, and executed. In particular, this affects the downstream GeoServer project. Version 1.2.22 will contain a patch that disables the ability to inject malicious code into the resulting script. Users unable to upgrade may negate the ability to compile Jiffle scripts from the final application, by removing janino-x.y.z.jar from the classpath. Exploitation requires remote network access, low attack complexity, no authentication required, and no user interaction required.
